SETTING BACKGROUND
Red vs Blue is a comedy-action sci-fi series set in the Halo universe about a group of space marines in the wake of (and during, in flashbacks) an interspecies war. The characters are largely connected to a program called Project Freelancer which sought to create the perfect solider and used them as canon fodder for training their agents. Over the course of the series they engage in antics with not only one another but the post-war remnants of Freelancer itself, some of the aliens they were previously fighting, and evil corporations looking to use both alien and Freelancer technology against humanity itself. They're heroes! They just don't seem like it.
HISTORY
- (headcanon) Josh's parents are killed in action during the Covenant war, sending him into foster care.
- (headcanon) He enlists straight out of high school, optimistic about contributing to the war effort.
- As a young soldier on leave on Reach, Josh meets the future Agent Carolina at club Errera.
- (implied canon) He's recruited out of the UNSC Marines for Project Freelancer, a new effort to create the perfect soldier.
- He becomes Agent New York, assigned to be the team's infiltration specialist, and is shocked to realize that the woman he met and fell for back on Reach is now Agent Carolina.
- York participates in a training exercise with Maine and Wyoming against the newcomer Agent Texas. She kicks their ass repeatedly, until Maine and Wyoming break protocol and start using live ammo on the training floor. While trying to protect Texas, York is knocked down and Maine's grenade lands next to him. Texas shoots his armor with lockdown paint to protect him but the explosion shatters his visor, damaging his left eye beyond repair and leaving him with a blind side and a scar down the side of his face. He will hold a quiet, fairly passive grudge against Maine and Wyoming for the rest of his life.
- Never one to stay down, York participates in the Sarcophagus mission before he's properly released from the infirmary. During the mission he attempts to pick a holographic lock and sets off an alarm, an indication that his infiltration skills are impaired by his injury.
- That mission was a shit show and they still don't know its actual objective; York asks his best friend North if they're actually the good guys. He's beginning to doubt the project.
- York is assigned an AI fragment, designated "Delta." He proceeds to break protocol regarding AIs repeatedly, allowing them to converse with one another and discussing the "Alpha" with North. He's starting to question where the fragments come from and how they're made.
- Agent Connecticut defects from Project Freelancer, leaving behind information on the Alpha and "Beta" for Tex, the latter unbeknownst to York.
- York's protectiveness towards Carolina is apparent onscreen as he watches her train through the night. After she receives two AI and challenges Tex to a match, she collapses in agony when the Director calls out "Allison" to stop the fight. York remains at her bedside in the infirmary, holding her hand while she's unconscious for several days.
- (implied canon) Tex reveals the truth about the Alpha and herself to York, and he decides to join her in not only defecting from Freelancer but attacking the Mother of Invention to save the Alpha from being tortured. The Director is committing a war crime by fragmenting Alpha and the Freelancers are being experimented on and manipulated like lab rats. He's done.
- During the break-in, York tries to convince Carolina to trust him and come with them and fails miserably. She knocks him out and throws the sign of their friendship (a lighter from Errera where they met) at him.
- Maine, manipulated by his AI Sigma into becoming the Meta, steals Carolina's AI and throws her off a cliff; by all evidence she should be dead, but York doesn't believe it.
- York goes on the run with Delta, using his infiltration skills to break and enter and steal to survive.
- Tex finds York and convinces him to help her go after Wyoming, who mortally wounds York in the ensuing fight.
- Delta decides to stay with York as he dies despite their belief that the AI will be destroyed when York's armor shuts down.
PERSONALITY
York is the most casual, social, friendliest member of Project Freelancer. From the start he comes across as laid-back, with an uncanny ability to maintain his chill in high-stress situations. He's the one to try and defuse tension, imploring friends and foes alike to calm down. Even when everything is going wrong, York doesn't get worked up. He'll just yell "I don't wanna do this!" while leaping off a skyscraper and adapt, coming up with a solution on the fly. He prefers to have a plan, but is more than capable of improvising when the situation demands it. The other characters joke that York is more lucky than he is good at his job, but if you look closely you see that York is incredibly observant and far more intelligent than he first appears.
Despite being genuinely friendly and well-intentioned, York is a poor communicator and has a tendency to miss the mark getting his meaning across. Being smart doesn't mean he's eloquent. He's naturally chatty and talks a bit too much, his jokes are sometimes inappropriate to the mood and fall flat, or his teasing will come off a bit sharper than he meant it to. He's honest, a shit liar, and not particularly tactful, a combination that doesn't earn him points. Expressing concern for his teammates can sound like he feels he knows best, so when he actually has something important to say they tend to brush him off. The exception is North, who can articulate York's thoughts better than York himself. No one else seems to really "get" him. For the most part York is well-liked, but gets along with everyone thanks to his easy demeanor and the fact that it's obvious how much he cares for his team. He also seemingly lets things roll off him for the sake of keeping the peace -- there's conflict among the Freelancers already, to the point that it compromises missions and Agents' safety, so he's not going to add to that in the moment. But underneath, York has questions of his own.
York is a naturally curious person, a critical thinker that philosophizes about their situation and questions the motives behind what they're being told to do. Ultimately they're all here to win the war, yes, but Freelancer keeps nearly everything a secret and this bothers York a great deal. Part of York's digging for answers is due to the fact that he has such a strong moral compass. He expresses to North in a private moment that he fears they might not be the good guys after all -- he doesn't want to doubt the Project but he has a driving need to be doing the right thing, and early on he can see signs that things don't add up. They're scolded for asking even simple questions about mission objectives, and Delta murmurs inside his head. These are red flags that inform York's decision to trust that CT's data is the actual truth and defect, despite his intense loyalty to his teammates. Despite how difficult it is for him to go against Carolina. York loves Carolina intensely. Over the past two seasons we've seen him watch over her as she trains through the night, mother hen her before battles, and remain at her sickbed for days straight holding her hand. But his refusal to hurt her results in his losing her entirely.
Following the crash of the Mother of Invention, York is forced to go on the run. If they catch him they'll take Delta. It means splitting up from his known-to-be-alive friends, but he needs to go into hiding. For someone as social as York this is pretty sucky, but he does still have Delta. The AI is now literally all of York's "human" contact and becomes his dearest friend and confidant. For all that they didn't get along at the start this pair would now -- and in fact do -- give up their lives for each other. York continues running to protect his little buddy, despite it meaning that he is otherwise alone and has to resort to criminal acts like petty theft and break ins to survive. And when York is fatally wounded, Delta chooses to stay with him to ease his pain as he passes, despite their belief that if the AI is still in the implant when York dies he will be destroyed.
At this canon point, York is at first glance the same easygoing, super chill, joke cracking guy... but underneath he's struggling with a lot. There's something kind of world-weary in his voice, a bitterness about his situation that's settled into resignation that this is just how it is. He doesn't have the will or energy to be angry, and knows that it wouldn't change anything, but there's a heavy weight on him these days that he has no choice but to bear alone. He wonders if maybe he'd acted sooner, or been better at getting through to Carolina, or just fought harder, things could have gone better for everyone. It's not his fault that Freelancer went down in flames, he just wishes he'd pulled more of his friends from the fire. These days he also consults Delta on every decision he makes: if he should trust Tex in the first place when she comes to him for help, and whether or not to actually provide that help. The two no longer clash or disregard each other's advice, all their choices are made together. Ultimately, it's not that their enemy is planning something terrible that sways them. They decide the chance for some payback is worth the risks... the ultimate sign that York is burnt out on doing the right thing. He still has that desire to be the good guy, but just because his compass is pointing in the right direction doesn't mean he'll walk that way. Or at all, he's very tired and would like a vacation. Unfortunately, he found himself dying before he could catch a break.

POWER SELECTION
Noospheric Powers
I'd like to give York phase shift, the (limited) ability to pass through solid matter or allow it to pass through himself. This is partially a play off his infiltration abilities (or lack thereof at some points) and partially fear-induced from his trauma being killed in action.
Uses:
- he can reach into someone and to kill them (unphasing will displace the matter of their body)
- in theory he can also phase through other matter like water and air but this won't occur to him unless someone else points it out -- when phasing through air there's a hard time limit (see limitations)
- he can bring objects he can carry with him
- he can phase or unphase just parts of himself with practice (so he can reach into things without having to worry about floating or falling through the floor at the same time)
Limitations:
- he can only phase through solid matter for as long as he can hold his breath (unphasing displaces matter so it won't kill him to unphase as long as his head is out, but he will be stuck until the power "recharges")
- it takes twice as long to recharge his ability as he just used it for
- if phasing through air there's a hard limit of seven minutes (if Tom Cruise can do it I'll say York can get up there with practice)
- he cannot transport other people with him
- objects with an electrical impulse will take some practice to not disrupt the phase
- he cannot phase an object larger than he can carry
- energy attacks can affect him when phased

SETTING/SUITABILITY
➤ How do you expect your character to respond to the setting? Even if they plan to rebel in the long term, will they be able to at least obey enough to not get shocked to death?
York is highly adaptable, I expect the hardest thing for him to deal with in the short term will be Delta's absence in his mind, not complying enough to prevent being shocked to death! He knows how to play along to save his own skin, though he's likely to rebel in the long term once he has enough intel and means/backup to do so.
➤ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?
Honestly, I don't know! It depends very much on the CR that he develops and what missions they're sent on, as well as how the game plot twists and turns. I'm excited about the concept of being in a mission based game again and playing with cast I don't usually get to play off, as well as some other interesting characters I saw on the taken list. Ultimately York will want to take down the Evil Corporation, but I don't know yet how that'll manifest in game. Also of interest is writing him dealing with the loss of Delta, which I haven't done in years. He'll have to rely on other PCs quite a bit at first, trying to hide the psychological damage from Jorgmund.
➤ Does your character currently have skills that would allow them to adapt, survive, and do the heroic things being asked of them? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?
He does have these skills!
➤ If they're not used to cooperating with others, what makes you think they'll be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?
York is one of the most cooperative of the Freelancers, to be honest. He's a good teammate, he'll have your back and try to strategize with you whether you want him to or not.
➤ Will your character have long-term plans to rebel against Jorgmund? If so, how? Will they betray the other PCs and cooperate with Jorgmund? If so, how do you plan to handle the negative CR that might arise?
Long-term, York will join the other PCs in rebelling against Jorgmund.

I'm a gatherer, I guess. I'd rather not have to kill anything I don't have to and can forage for what I need to survive. And yes, before you beep, forage does usually mean steal. Still better than killing people, right?

My least favorite thing about humanity is how much we hurt one another. History is full of war and conquest and torture and slavery and most of it was totally unnecessary, just some asshole decided they were going to get what they wanted no matter what it took, no matter how much pain it caused. So intentionally, obviously, but also accidentally, just by not considering others or understanding where they're coming from, or even trying. That's what sucks about people.
[ There's silence, but no beep, no objection to his statement. York leans back in his chair, flashing the interviewers a lopsided smile. ]
Just three? I could keep going. I wasn't lying that I'm kind of noisy.

FINAL QUESTIONS
The players won't know what the mods are doing with these questions until sometime later.
➤ Will your character suspect some kind of guiding intelligence has brought them to the game? Or will they think it was random or done by Jorgmund?
York will probably think it was either random (why would he be saved from death?) or done by Jorgmund looking for people to recruit who wouldn't be missed. He's not religious enough to believe in a higher power/guiding intelligence, and tbh if that was suggested he'd counter with those forces usually just being alien bullshit humans don't understand yet. Not a God/etc.
➤ If they think it was something other than Jorgmund, like God or some other force of fate, what character traits do they think of that intelligence as having? Is it cruel or kind? Capriciously punishing them or doing it for good reason?
